The Countdown Begins for Urban Tech, The Urban Technology Show
September 30, 2026The launch of Italy’s 2026 Home EV Charger Incentive is providing fresh momentum to the private electric vehicle charging market. According to an analysis by ProntoPro, requests for home charging point installations increased by 160.4% in the first nine months of the year compared with the same period in 2025. September recorded particularly strong growth, with requests rising by 273.3% year on year.
Consumer interest has also been boosted by the opening of the application portal on September 22 for the incentive promoted by Italy’s Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy. The scheme covers 80% of eligible expenses, offering grants of up to €1,500 for private individuals and €8,000 for condominium installations.
Home EV Chargers: Condominium Garages Drive Demand
ProntoPro’s research provides an overview of Italian consumers’ preferences when it comes to home EV charging. The largest share of requests, accounting for 41.5%, concerns the installation of charging stations in private garages within condominium buildings. Detached homes follow at 28.4%, while private outdoor areas, such as courtyards and gardens, account for 17.4%. A further 11.4% of requests involve shared condominium parking spaces.
In terms of technical specifications, 7 kW wallboxes are the most popular option, representing 58.7% of total demand. Charging devices with a power output of up to 5 kW account for 28.7% of requests.
Another important factor in installation planning is the distance between the charging station and the electrical panel or meter. In 44.6% of cases, the required cable run does not exceed 10 metres, while 26.2% of installations involve distances of up to 20 metres. Cable runs of 30 and 50 metres account for 15.9% and 7.9% of requests, respectively. Only 5.5% of installations require distances of 70 metres or more.
How Much Does It Cost to Install a Home EV Charger?
According to ProntoPro, the average cost of installing a wallbox in Italy is €959. This is an indicative figure that can vary considerably depending on the electrical system, the characteristics of the property and the distance between the electricity meter and the charging point.
More complex installations, particularly those requiring longer cable runs, may involve technical inspections and additional building work, potentially increasing the final cost.
Rome Overtakes Milan in Installation Requests
The geographical distribution of requests reveals a shift compared with 2025. Rome now leads the ranking, accounting for 14.5% of all installation requests nationwide. Milan, which previously held first place, has dropped to second position with a 10% share.
Other areas recording significant demand include Monza and Brianza, Turin, Bologna, Brescia, Varese, Padua and Verona. Naples, with 3.2% of total requests, is the only city in southern Italy to feature in the top ten.
Growing Demand for Other Electric Mobility Services
The increase in demand extends beyond charging infrastructure. ProntoPro’s data also highlights growing interest in other services related to electric mobility.
In particular, requests for insurance quotes for fully electric cars have increased by 37%. Demand for electric bicycle repair services has also risen by 13%.
Turnkey Installations, Solar Integration and Incentive Applications
Alongside the sharp increase in installation requests, consumer needs are becoming increasingly diverse. More users are looking for comprehensive services that include not only wallbox installation but also equipment supply, system certification and assistance with the documentation required to obtain government incentives.
Some requests also come from customers who already own a charging station and only need installation services or electrical system upgrades to ensure regulatory compliance.
Interest is also growing in integrating wallboxes with solar photovoltaic systems and battery storage, allowing electric vehicle owners to use self-generated electricity to charge their cars.
Particular attention is being paid to installations in condominium buildings, where authorisation procedures, connections to private electricity supplies and compliance with electrical regulations can present additional challenges. Fire safety requirements are also especially important for installations in underground garages.
Overall, ProntoPro’s findings point to a rapidly expanding home EV charging market in Italy, where government incentives are accompanied by increasing demand for customised charging solutions and comprehensive installation services.
The appointment for industry operators is at E-Charge 2026, the trade fair dedicated to the EV charging industry and market, charging stations, technologies, infrastructure, and services, scheduled from 7 to 9 October 2026 at Bologna Exhibition Center.
It will take place as part of Urban Tech – The Urban Technology Show, the new event dedicated to e-mobility, traffic, commuting, security, telecom & data, and environment.
